Sedative

At Manchego Dental, we understand that the thought of dental care can be a daunting experience.  Our team is prepared and willing to help appease your anxiety and fear of the dental chair by listening and being attentive to your needs, and to clearly communicate all aspects of your dental visit.  The goal is to make you feel as comfortable as possible, ready you for treatment, and remind you that you are in control. In addition, we provide anxiolytic methods to eligible patients to help them feel more relaxed during the dental visit.

Our sedative services include:

  • Oral Sedation: This method is typically administered to our adult patients. Our dentist will prescribe the sedative medication prior to the dental appointment. Common sedatives used in dentistry belong to the class of benzodiazepines. If more information is needed or if another type of sedative is indicated, we will consult with the patient’s physician. During the procedure, the patient will be awake and may remain under the sedative effect for a short period of time after dismissal. Due to its low dose, this method normally does not hinder a person’s normal judgement. However, we always recommend that an adult companion be present to act as the designated driver.

  • Nitrous Oxide: Nitrous Oxide or “laughing gas” is a common anxiolytic used in children and adults. It works by breathing nitrous oxide gas through a special mask that reaches the nervous system (brain) to stimulate a relaxed or feel-good state.  The patient will be awake throughout the dental visit and may remain under the sedative effect for a short period of time after dismissal.  That is why we always recommend that an adult companion be present to act as the designated driver.
